About Capitol Reef National Park

Capitol Reef protects the Waterpocket Fold, a wrinkle in the earth's crust about 100 miles long that looks like a wall of colorful cliffs. Some of the rock domes look like the US Capitol, and the cliff line acted like a reef that blocked travel for early settlers. In the middle is Fruita, a tiny settlement with orchards the Park Service still looks after.

Mormon pioneers settled Fruita in the 1880s and planted the fruit trees. The area became a national monument in 1937 and a national park in 1971. In 2015 it was named an International Dark Sky Park.

Capitol Reef National Park is a national park in Utah. The National Park Service places its center at 38.28 degrees north and 111.25 degrees west, and the sky calculations on this page use that point. How dark is the sky?

The Park Service models how much artificial light brightens the sky across the lower 48. At the point used for Capitol Reef National Park, it puts the added glow at about 3% of the natural brightness of a moonless sky (a ratio of 0.029). That makes it 4th darkest of the 47 parks it covers. Lower is darker. This is a model, not a reading taken at the park, and it describes one point, so the edges of a large park can differ.

  • Sun, Moon and galactic centre positions calculated for the park's latitude and longitude from the low-precision formulas in Paul Schlyter's "Computing planetary positions", with the standard sidereal-time and horizon formulas. The code is checked against known events: new and full moons within 5 minutes, and the September equinox within 1 minute.
