About Mesa Verde National Park
Mesa Verde in southwest Colorado is famous for its cliff dwellings, built into the sandstone alcoves by the Ancestral Pueblo people. Cliff Palace has about 150 rooms. Visitors can tour some of the dwellings with a ranger, and the mesa tops hold hundreds of other sites.
The Ancestral Pueblo people lived on the mesa for about 700 years until around 1300 CE. Two ranchers, Richard Wetherill and Charlie Mason, spotted Cliff Palace in 1888. Congress created the park in 1906, the first one set aside to protect works of human hands.
Mesa Verde National Park is a national park in Colorado. The National Park Service places its center at 37.24 degrees north and 108.46 degrees west, and the sky calculations on this page use that point. At the point used for Mesa Verde National Park, it puts the added glow at about 32% of the natural brightness of a moonless sky (a ratio of 0.322). That makes it 26th darkest of the 47 parks it covers. Lower is darker. This is a model, not a reading taken at the park, and it describes one point, so the edges of a large park can differ.
