About Canyonlands National Park
Canyonlands is a big, rugged park in southeastern Utah, divided into districts by the Green and Colorado rivers. The Island in the Sky is a mesa with long views, the Needles is full of striped spires, and the Maze is so remote that few visitors ever go. Most of the park is rough backcountry.
Congress created it in 1964, and the signature came from President Lyndon Johnson. Stewart Udall, the Interior Secretary at the time, had pushed hard for it. Ancient rock art survives in places such as the Great Gallery in Horseshoe Canyon, made by hunter-gatherers long before the Ancestral Puebloans.
